| Inadequate corticosteroid production relative to the severity of a critical illness, leading to an impaired stress response. Adrenal insufficiency is due to impaired functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, altered cortisol metabolism, and tissue corticosteroid resistance. It is commonly associated with sepsis, septic shock, and other severe critical illnesses. |
