A type of epilepsy that presents with generalized tonic-clonic seizures usually between 10 and 25 years of age in an otherwise normal adolescent or adult. The generalized tonic-clonic seizures are typically provoked by sleep deprivation. Other seizure types do not occur. Development and cognition are typically normal. Neurological examination is normal. The electroencephalogram must show generalized epileptiform discharges or capture a generalized tonic-clonic seizure and have a normal background.
